Tribù Cesta collection

Monica Armani built a basket weave into the back of a lounge chair and set the whole thing on a swivel. Cesta is a single piece, and the back is the reason it exists.

The collection

Cesta in one paragraph

The back is rope worked in close vertical runs around a curved aluminium hoop, which is where the basket reading comes from. It wraps far enough forward to work as an armrest on both sides, so the chair holds you in rather than sitting you up straight. Everything below it is quiet by comparison — four tapered legs and a ring.

The seat turns a full circle on that ring. That is the practical case for the chair: two of them around a fire pit let people face the view or turn back into the conversation without anyone dragging furniture across a stone terrace. The turn is damped enough that it does not spin loose when you stand up.

The cushions are deep, not the thin pads a woven chair usually comes with. A seat cushion and a back cushion that follows the curve of the weave, both quick-dry foam under solution-dyed acrylic, which is what makes the chair usable through a Houston August rather than only in photographs.

Aluminium is the right frame near water — nothing in it rusts, so a chair that lives beside a pool in Naples or on a dock in Sag Harbor stays sound. Rinse the rope with fresh water when salt collects on it, use a soft brush and soapy water on anything else, and stand the cushions on edge after rain so both faces dry.

Build

How a Cesta piece is layered

  1. Solution-dyed acrylic cover

Color goes through the fiber before it is spun, so sun fades it slowly and across the whole cushion at once.

  2. Quick-dry foam

Open-cell core that pushes water out through the bottom instead of holding it in the middle.

  3. Hand-woven rope shell

Vertical rope runs around the hoop. It shapes the back, carries the cushions and drains in minutes.

  4. Aluminium frame and swivel

Legs, hoop and the ring the seat turns on. No rust, which is why the chair can live at the water.
