Tribù CTR armchairs with open rope-woven backs around an outdoor dining table

Tribù CTR collection

Piergiorgio Cazzaniga curved an open rope weave around the back of CTR and left daylight between it and the seat. From a few feet away the back looks like it is not attached to anything.

The collection

CTR in one paragraph

The weave is rope worked around a curved hoop, loose enough to see the garden through. Because it stops short of the seat frame the back appears to hang in the air, and that gap is the whole idea of the chair. Up close you can follow where each run of rope turns at the edge of the hoop.

The legs are thin powder-coated metal, splayed a little at the floor, and they take up almost no visual room. A row of CTR armchairs down a long table leaves the view through the terrace open in a way solid-back dining chairs never do.

Three chairs, three heights. The armchair sits at dining height, the bar chair takes a raised outdoor counter, and the lounge chair drops lower with a deeper seat for the end of the evening. All three carry a loose cushion rather than a fixed pad, so the covers come off to wash.

Rope weave takes more sun than it looks like it should, because the color sits inside the fiber rather than on the surface of it. Rinse the weave where salt spray reaches, lift the cushions after heavy rain so the undersides dry, and use a soft brush on the rope. A pressure washer will open the weave up.

Build

How a CTR piece is layered

  1. Solution-dyed acrylic cover

Color is fixed in the fiber before it is spun, so a season of sun takes it down evenly rather than in patches.

  2. Quick-dry foam

Open-cell core. Water drains out through the base of the cushion instead of pooling in the middle.

  3. Hand-woven rope

Worked open around a curved hoop. It shapes the back, drains in minutes and leaves the view through the chair.

  4. Powder-coated frame

Thin metal legs and the hoop the rope is worked onto. The coat is the weather layer, so keep salt rinsed off.
