Tribù Kos collection

Studio Segers built Kos from wide teak slats instead of the thin battens most garden furniture uses. The result looks plainer and sits heavier, and the seating angle was settled before the shape was.

Kos in one paragraph

Slat width is the whole argument. Broad boards put more wood under you and leave fewer gaps, so you get out of a Kos chair without slat marks across your legs after an hour. The gaps that remain still drain, which is what you want on a Seattle patio or after a Florida afternoon storm.

Teak carries its own oils, which is why the frames hold up through Gulf humidity and Arizona dryness without a protective treatment. Left alone the wood turns silver-grey through the first season outside. Oiled twice a year it keeps the warm brown it arrives in. Either way the wood lasts the same.

Five pieces cover a full outdoor room. Armchair and dining table handle meals, the bar chair sits at a counter-height island, and the lounge chair and lounger take the pool side. Nothing here needs a matching side piece from another collection to work.

Care is soap, water and a brush. Skip the pressure washer: it tears the soft grain out from between the harder rings and leaves the surface furry. If the silver-grey has gone patchy, a light sanding evens it out.

How a Kos piece is layered

Weathered surface

The top fraction of a millimeter, which turns silver-grey outdoors in a first season and stops there.
Teak grain

Broad slats cut so the grain runs the length of the seat, where the load is.
Natural oils

Teak makes its own water repellent, so the wood needs no sealer to survive rain.
Solid heartwood

The dense core under everything else, where teak gets its weight and its resistance to rot.
