Tribù Nagomi collection

Inoda+Sveje drew Nagomi around a cast aluminum frame light enough to shift with one hand, with handwoven Canax across the back and seat. The name comes from the Japanese idea of harmony, and the lines follow it — flowing, quiet, nothing shouting for attention.

The collection

Nagomi in one paragraph

Weight is the first thing you notice. Cast aluminum keeps the frame ultra-light, so a chair moves from the table to the pool edge without two people and a plan. On a rooftop terrace where furniture gets rearranged for every gathering, that is the difference between using the space and admiring it.

The collection comes in two pairings. Linen-toned aluminum goes with a weave in the same linen shade; dark bronze aluminum goes with a copper-toned weave. Linen disappears against pale stone and stucco; dark bronze holds its own against dark decking and heavy planting, and it shows dust less in a dry Southwest yard.

Handwoven Canax does the sitting surface. Air moves through a woven seat, so it never gets as hot underfoot as a solid metal panel in Phoenix afternoon sun, and rain drains instead of pooling. The texture is also the only ornament the collection has.

Five pieces run from dining to lounging. Armchair, bench and dining table handle meals — the table takes a teak or a ceramic top on an aluminum frame, with a 320 by 100 cm version for long gatherings and a 130 cm bench alongside. The lounge chair and the lounger take the other half, and the lounger can be ordered on wheels, on stackable legs, or on fixed legs, depending on whether it moves daily or goes into storage every fall.

Build

How a Nagomi piece is layered

  1. Outdoor cushion cover

Removable and washable, on the lounge chair and lounger. The woven pieces need no cover at all.

  2. Foam core

Open core that drains from both faces because the weave under it is open too.

  3. Handwoven Canax

The seating surface. Worked by hand in linen or copper tone, it carries the load and lets water and air pass.

  4. Cast aluminum frame

Ultra-light under everything, finished in linen or dark bronze, with nothing to rust at the coast.
