Monica Armani gave Tao a heavy base and a thin top, and the collection lives in the gap between them. Three tables, each standing on a single sculptural pedestal in lightened concrete.

Tao in one paragraph

A pedestal frees the perimeter. Nobody straddles a leg, nobody knocks a knee getting up, and chairs can be pulled in anywhere around the edge, which usually means one more place setting fits than around a four-legged table of the same footprint. On a round or oval top that advantage is at its largest.

The concrete is a lightened mix, so the base looks like stone without the weight of a solid block of it. The surface keeps a matte grain rather than a polish, and that reads better in flat daylight than a glossy stone would. It also hides the fine dust that settles on any outdoor table between one weekend and the next.

The collection is three tables and nothing else. A coffee table, a rectangular dining table and an oval dining table. There is no seating in Tao, so chairs come from elsewhere in the Tribù range. Rope-backed dining chairs are what the factory photographs around it, and the pairing works because the table brings the mass while the chairs bring the texture.

Concrete is porous by nature. Wipe spills before they sit, red wine and citrus oil in particular, and use mild soap rather than an acid cleaner. In Scottsdale or Palm Desert, shade the top through the middle of the day if you plan to set glasses down at noon, because any stone-like surface in full sun gets hot to the touch. How a Tao piece is layered

Table top

Thin at the edge, matte on the face. The thinness is what keeps a heavy base from looking heavy.
Pedestal

One sculptural column instead of four legs. It carries the load down to a single footprint in the middle.
Lightened concrete

A concrete mix made lighter than the poured kind, so the base reads as stone without the mass of solid stone.
Footprint

Nothing at the corners. Chairs slide in anywhere around the rim, which is where the extra seat comes from.
