Monica Armani came back from Japan with the line work of its temples and its writing in her head, and Ukiyo is what she drew from that. Teak frames, curved where you would expect a straight run, holding loose cushions in pale fabric.

Ukiyo in one paragraph

The armchair shows the idea fastest. Arms and back are turned in continuous curves, and the top of the back is split into two thin rails with a gap between them. That gap costs money in joinery and buys nothing structural. It is there because a solid back would have made the chair heavier to look at, which is the opposite of the point.

Seats are slatted teak, so a chair left out through a shower is usable again as soon as the rain stops. Cushions sit on top and lift off in one movement — a pad on the dining chair, a fuller seat and back on the lounge chair — which is what you want when the forecast turns while you are still at work.

Five pieces. An armchair, a lounge chair, a lounger, a dining table and a low table. That is enough for one terrace to eat and to lounge without borrowing from another collection, and because everything shares the same teak, the dining end and the lounge end read as one thing from across the garden.

Teak is the whole material story here. Left alone it turns silver-grey over a first season outdoors, which plenty of owners prefer; oiled twice a year it holds the honey color it arrives in. Neither choice changes how long the wood lasts, so decide by what you want to look at. Rinse with fresh water if you are near the ocean, wash covers to the label, and bring cushions inside for winter. Pricing is on request.

How a Ukiyo piece is layered

Teak frame

Curved rather than squared, with the joints doing the work. Oil it twice a year or let the wood go silver.
Slatted seat

Open teak slats under the cushion. Water runs between them instead of sitting in a tray.
Cushion

Loose on every piece. Lift it off before rain and the chair itself needs nothing.
Outdoor fabric

Ask which weaves in the range are solution-dyed. In those the color is fixed in the fiber, so sun fades it slowly and evenly.
