Yabu Pushelberg drew Amanu around a solid teak frame with a Canax sling stretched inside it. The wood holds the shape, the sling does the sitting, and the seat stays thin because of it.

Amanu in one paragraph

A sling is one taut panel, not a cushion. Canax is stretched across the teak frame and tensioned there, so rain passes through instead of soaking in and the seat is dry an hour after a Gulf Coast squall. The chairs also weigh less than they look, which counts if you clear a pool deck before a storm.

Frames are solid teak throughout. Bare, the wood turns silver-grey over a first season outside; oiled twice a year it keeps the warm brown it ships in, and the choice changes nothing about how long it lasts. Dry desert air pulls moisture out of teak faster, so a wipe of oil goes further in Phoenix than it does in Connecticut.

Seven pieces cover a terrace end to end. The dining chair and dining table handle meals, the lounge chair and three-seat sofa handle the evening, and the daybed reads as a floating plane rather than a box. Two tables finish it — a low table in front of the sofa and a C-table that reaches over an armrest for a glass.

Cleaning is soap, water and a soft brush on the sling face. A pressure washer will stretch the panel, so keep it away from both. Salt air does not attack teak, which makes a beach house fair ground for the frames, but cushions still do better indoors through a humid week than left out on the deck.

How a Amanu piece is layered

Solution-dyed acrylic cover

Color is fixed in the fiber before it is spun, so sun takes it down slowly and evenly instead of in patches.
Quick-dry foam

Open-cell core. Water runs out through the bottom of the cushion rather than sitting in the middle of it.
Canax sling

One tensioned panel across the frame. It carries the weight, gives a little under you, and drains on its own.
Solid teak frame

The only structural part of the chair. Left bare it greys to silver; oiled twice a year it stays brown.
